INTERNET IS THE FUTURE OF LABOR?
"The unions have some major challenges to overcome in changing its organizational culture, and find their way into this new world. But I think the new trends of the Web is a great opportunity for volunteer-based organizations. "
"In the debate over whether the Internet is the future of unions, we must admit that this certainly is not. Unions do not have the budgets to be at the forefront of technological change. The money spent has to come from membership fees. However, I think there are small signs that trade unions could dramatically increase Internet usage in the coming years. " MONEY
"The Internet is getting cheaper, and this means that experimentation is also growing. Web media are low cost, and can help level the playing field between a union with few resources, poorly funded, and the communication strengths of the other party to a conflict or campaign (whether businesses or governments)
DEMOCRACY "Unions are democratic organizations and their members have a say in its operation. Since a query technologies allow faster and cheaper with membership, much of this will be more demanding with their unions. Want to be consulted more regularly, and want to see how their contributions are used in the organization. " GROWTH
"Trade union membership is concentrated in the public sector and the largest sectors. To grow, unions will have to find ways to approach people they now have no contact at all.
"A big 'but', the digital divide: this does not mean that the future of unions lies only on the Internet. There is a careful balance to maintain, especially with regard to union democracy: they should allow more people to contribute to the union, but at the same time can not be excluded from participation in the membership that is not in the network. "
PREDICTIONS FOR THE NEXT FIVE YEARS
1. "I think we will see much more use of the Internet by unions that directly empowering their base and reduce pressure on the center of the organizations."
2. "An interesting area for the coming years is the idea of \u200b\u200bextending this network of international representatives. It allows workers to connect with each other and discover how their colleagues work. "
3. "We'll see online campaigns more attractive, and not just from the center of the organization. "
4. "There will be an improvement in speed and scope of democracy in the workplace, and internal union democracy. In many cases, consultation between workers and unions will be much faster and influential. "
5. "I think we also see the unions to go beyond their traditional messages and offerings to the membership, and also using the Internet in new ways to attract people who would otherwise never consider joining them"
In a few days I leave the second part of this post, where I will leave my comments to this interesting article.
